I SKIRTED OVERACTIVE seven-year-olds, picking up fallen cups and licked-clean paper plates. My companion hung off my neck in total bliss—content to be out of her cage and seeing the world.

I assumed. Who knows what a snake is thinking?

Jaxson cut me off coming out of the kitchen. “Sorry, bab— Fuck!” He jumped back ten feet. “What are you doing with that thing?”

Giggles sounded from the patio entrance. Three little munchkins stuck their heads inside. “Fuck!” they crowed.

“Jaxson!”

“I said fudge,” he shouted.

They ran away laughing their heads off.

“Nicely done, babe.” He gave me and my legless friend a wide berth as I made for the trash. “Their parents will never let them come back here. They always give me side-eye for being twenty-one with a seven-year-old.”

“They can shove their side-eye back up their... bottom,” he finished at my look. “Besides, we don’t want those three mini-demons back. I caught them literally climbing the walls. Demon One was halfway off the drape preparing to leap onto the blanket Demon Two and Demon Three were holding out.”

“Yikes,” I said between giggles. “Caroline was right. We should’ve kept the party outside so we wouldn’t have all these kids running free in this big mansion.”

“We tried, but Adam had to show them his jungle room, and once they were in— Dammit, Val. I can’t talk to you while you’re wearing that thing.”

“This sweet lady? She’s just a little python,” I crooned, stroking her scales. “Since when are you afraid of snakes?”

He visibly shuddered. “What rational person likes snakes?”

“Alright, alright.” I stuck my head outside.

Adam’s party was in full swing. We decided to skip the event planner and handle everything ourselves. We killed it—if I say so myself.

We set up tables throughout the lawn covered in animal plates, animal balloons, and stuffed critters for each kid to take home. The big balloon guy came early that morning to inflate the life-sized rhino, giraffe, elephant, and the rest. We had a fleet of toy Jeeps the children rode to weave through the animals. All that on top of the four separate live animal shows featuring snakes, lemurs, petting zoo, and bunnies, Adam was having so much fun, he was almost distracted from missing Maverick.

Almost.

I headed off a meltdown that morning by promising we’d record every second of his party, and when Maverick came back, they’d watch it together and Adam could tell him what happened. It made Adam feel better, but not me. I promised I’d have him home by now. All these weeks later, I was still playing the “what are you talking about?” game with Aiden and Jade.

I passed the snake off to her handler, then enfolded myself in Jaxson’s arms.

“I know,” he said gently. “I know.”

“If you know, then the three of you will stop fighting me. I have to confront Jade. This has gone on long enough.”

“You don’t have anything to confront her with. You’ve got spilled secrets with no name to put them to. You’ve got a vague comment about turning her life around.
